Error in systemd-sysctl service - "Failed to start Apply Kernel Variables"

Post by TobiKoe » 2020/07/13 19:12:45

Hi guys,

I'm new to Centos 7 and Linux in general and currently face a problem with the systemd-sysctl service. I get an error saying "Failed to start Apply Kernel Variables". The reason is given with "Line is not an assignment in file '/etc/sysctl.d/99-sysctl.conf" and "Line is not an assignment in file '/etc/sysctl.conf': (null)".

Centos release:
centos-release-7-8.2003.0.el7.centos.x84_64

Kernel version:
3.10.0-1127.el7.x86_64

This is the part of the journal containing the errors:

After this section there's more errors with the same messages. They seem to not offer any additional information but if it's requested I can post it too.

Here's what I tried to resolve it:
  • First I checked /etc/sysctl.conf for invalid lines. Everything seems to be fine.
    # sysctl settings are defined through files in
    # /usr/lib/sysctl.d/, /run/sysctl.d/, and /etc/sysctl.d/.
    #
    # Vendors settings live in /usr/lib/sysctl.d/.
    # To override a whole file, create a new file with the same in
    # /etc/sysctl.d/ and put new settings there. To override
    # only specific settings, add a file with a lexically later
    # name in /etc/sysctl.d/ and put new settings there.
    #
    # For more information, see sysctl.conf(5) and sysctl.d(5).

  • I then called "systemctl status sysctl.service". Here it says the service ran successfully.

  • The values in sysctl.conf are also correctly written into their respective /proc/sys/ files.
  • I commented out all lines in sysctl.conf and still get the same errors. Furthermore I removed sysctl.conf completely. The errors stayed the same...

I'm a bit at a loss here. Am I missing something obvious? Does anyone have an idea what to look out for or what the cause might be?

It goes to note that the server does what I want it to do. I just feel unwell ignoring such things.

Thanks,
Tobias

As per https://access.redhat.com/solutions/3967701, you have a broken copy of /etc/sysctl.conf in your initramfs. Recreating your initramfs should do the trick.

I saw this article on redhat but couldn't view the solution.

Anyway, it is fixed now. Thanks!
