Urgent : big file deletion problem system centos 6

Post by michael10fr » 2020/03/31 10:50:44

Good morning, everyone,

I made a big mistake deleting system directories from linux centos6.

The unfortunate command launch is:

rm -rfv /usr/*

it knocked out the server in one fell swoop.

I've been working out of system mode rescue at O.V.H.

then managed to mount the RAID partition in the /mnt directory of the rescue mode OK

now I see the disk and I run the testdisk utility which shows me in red the directories I have deleted.

Here are the deleted directories:
/usr/bin
/usr/games
/usr/etc
/usr/include
/usr/lib

here's a screenshot here

so apparently the utility indicates 0 data ??

my question is if i install a linux system of the same version on vmware for example and i copy this file from my virtual machine can i start again normally ?

what would you do in my place?

because reinstalling the server is a big money as the database backups were not done and I don't know if I can get the databases back.
raw will run on another system??

How would you do it?

what do you think about delivering the files from another linux server with the same centos 6 version ?

thanks for your help

I'd boot in rescue mode and copy all your data somewhere safe and then reinstall from scratch.
CentOS 6 will die in November 2020 - migrate sooner rather than later!

And if you decide to reinstall, you may consider using
CentOS 7 or 8 - support for 6 ends later this year.
