GTK3 in Centos 6

Post by nouvo09 » 2016/05/07 10:19:13

Hi everybody

It figures out that since the update to version 46.0.1 of Firefox, it does not work anymore on Centos 6.

Apparently it claims for libgtk3.so that I can't find in any Centos repo.

Does anyone have some idea of what to do, or is it better to directly install the Fedora FC15 package ?

Thx

Pretty sure gtk3 means it belongs to gnome3 and CentOS 6 uses gnome2. There is no gnome3 for CentOS 6.

We already supply the ESR version of Firefox 45 for CentOS 6 and that will be updated to fix any new security vulnerabilities over the next year or so before it is replaced with the next ESR version, whatever that happens to be. ESR is Extended Support Rlease and is designed to allow distros to ship stable, well tested and secure firefox versions.
CentOS 8 died a premature death at the end of 2021 - migrate to Rocky/Alma/OEL/Springdale ASAP.

CentOS 5 and 6 are dead, do not use them.

I had a go at trying to shoehorn GTK+3 libraries onto CentOS 6 to see if Firefox 46 would work witrh them, but didn't really succeed. Other than upgrading to CentOS 7, the Firefox 45 ESR at:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/o ... tions/all/

is your short-term solution because that still uses GTK+2. However, I suspect the next ESR due in late 2016/early 2017 will switch to GTK+3. It'll be interesting to see what CentOS 6 do about their Firefox build at that point...

It's possible to have GTK3 on a system without Gnome3. I know because I have a Gentoo/MATE system which has gtk+2 and gtk+3 libraries installed, but no Gnome3.
