CentOS 4.4 and Vmware server

Post by rnutter » 2007/01/26 18:37:49

I have installed CentOS 4.4 as a VM under Vmware Server. Everything appears to be ok except for X11. When I type startx to bring up the GUI, it churns for a bit and then gives one of several errors. I have copied the xorg.conf file from another vm (mandriva linux) that is installed on the same machine where x11 is working. It wont work with that config file. I havent had any problems with x11 working before so I am at a lost to figure out why it wont work now.

Has anyone been able to get CentOS x11 to work under VMware server ? I have tried using RHEL 3, linux 2.6 and other linux as config file in Vmware but that doesnt seem to be the problem. I am thinking it may be something related to how CentOS is interpreting the environment since other Linux OS's work in x11 as a VM on the same machine.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Typically, the package "xorg-x11" contains the vmware_drv for what you are looking for...

Do you realy want the vmware CentOS guest to display a GUI login? This sounds like something for vncserver or remote [xdk]dm to me...

Since I am not totally fluent in the command line, I bring up the GUI only when I need to make some setting changes or add some packages where I can do in faster in the GUI than I can in the CLI. As a general rule, I bring up the VM in text mode to save overhead, etc.

Will see about getting the package you mentioned and giving that a try.

I'm having the same problem with Centos 5. vmware tools installed ok and in xorg.conf I see "vmware" entries now but it complains about

Undefined Monitor "vmware" references by Screen "Screen0"

I was going to run the x config script and answer the questions manually but I can't find it.

Would really appreciate some help getting this working.

thanks

Why don't you ssh -X into the virtual machine and run your gui software?
It will display on your local X.
