Newer Version of Samba on Centos 5.3

Post by Handieke » 2009/05/29 18:17:03

Hi,

What could be the consequences of installing a newer version of samba on a recent 5.3 installation,
we currently have samba 3.028.
Has anyone experience with the packages of sernet found at ftp://ftp.sernet.de/pub/samba/recent/centos/

We use samba extensively, do we benefit of updating to 3.3.4 ?

Thx for any info.

Andy

Yes but that is for centos 4.7 , not even on a production machine.

I'd like to hear from someone with actual field experience if it's worth upgrading.
Ofcourse Centos will withdraw support; however it is guessing why the haven't updated the samba version to a more recent one.

Guesswork is not involved.

Please be aware that at the binary level, CentOS == RHEL less the paid-for support from RH.

Here is upstream's policy on backporting security and bug fixes.

I found one of the better explanations of the policy, and the reasons for it, aside from the obvious, over at the Freeradius faq site. It might be worth a read for anyone wondering, "Why do they use such old packages.?"

http://wiki.freeradius.org/Red_Hat_FAQ#Current_Pre-built_RPM.27s_for_RHEL_5_and_CentOS_5

For whatever reason, that made it much clearer to me.
