Post by Sonsee » 2010/04/01 13:12:34

Hello everyone !

Can someone please explain me why CentOS is free and windows server cost from 1000$ to 4000$ ??? I mean the fact that difference is so big then I HAVE to lose something, don`t I? )))))) I do really mean no marketing at all, just want to know why is this... I will definitely install CentOS, but...

Welcome to the CentOS forums.

Moved to CentOS Social. Regarding the question of why Windows costs so much -- you have to ask Microsoft. :-D

Why CentOS is free? Because there are many volunteers working hard free of charge. :-o

... and because we get a free ride on the coattails of TUV, thanks to the GPL, and their generosity in adhering to the spirit and not just the letter of the license by making SRPMS freely and publicly available.

And TUV gets a free ride on the coattails of all the previous distributions and programmers who
also donated their time and talents.

Just as well this thread is in Social, otherwise another moderator might have to moderate the OT deviation . . . :-P  :pint:

Fortunate indeed, as I don't think the concept of OT really applies to Social. :pint: 8-)

It was not by fortune. A certain moderator moved this thread to Social predicting what to come.
