getting grub error 21

Post by hoodcanaljim » 2009/12/27 04:39:38

Hi

I am setting up a computer with centos 5.4 installed on the second partion of the second hard drive and at boot I get

Grub loading stage1.5.
Grub loading, please wait.....
error 21

device.map
(hd0) /dev/hda
(hd1) /dev/hdb

grub.conf
#boot=/dev/hda
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title CentOS (2.6.18-164.el5)
root (hd1,1)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.el5 ro root=/dev/VolGroup01/LogVol00 rhgb quiet
initrd /initrd-2.6.18-164.el5.img
title WinXPsp3
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

I have been running in circles reading grub docs and trying supergrub cd to no avail
this whole thing may have cost me another pound of hair.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Jim

Well I've given up any hope of getting centos running on this machine before it goes back to its owner (one of my kids). I am taking it into town tomorrow and drop it off so..

I did find a couple of good sites with info about grub.
http://jbakshi.50webs.com/Linux_tutorial/GRUB/GNU GRUB simplified.html
http://www.supergrubdisk.org/

but my problems go beyond my understanding. even after booting "linux rescue" to get a grub prompt, grub can't find any of the required files. and I don't have time enough to get that much smarter so...

Thanks anyway
Jim
