Hello there, you may find the answer below.

https://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=32047&forum=14

basically it said that upgrade between two major versions (5 and 6) is not supported.

So you may want to back up your data and do a clean install instead, or simply just stay on 5.6 for now...

I can't help but agree, as my answer was given in the topic cited; however, see also this advice for the adventurous.

Normally, this will result in a 'blinking cursor' on a black screen.

I would just tar up your data, load the packages and install fresh.

Going back to the Red Hat 6.0 days, you would never able to just 'update' to newer releases. Archive your data, then rsync, tar and copy your config's to the new server.

Got my curiosity up enough the try the upgrade foolishness. Started with a fresh install of CentOS 5.5 x86_64 on VirtualBox (on the theory that the older packages would have less chance of having higher versions than 6.0 packages) booted from 6.0 x86_64 DVD#1 and entered "linux upgradeany" at the boot prompt. The installer found the old CentOS and offered to upgrade it, but the upgrade bombed right after transferring the install image to the hard disk. System rebooted OK and works at 5.5 without apparent ill effects, but no upgrade.

You should back up any valuable data and do a fresh install.
