Asus wireless card not working

Post by kavery » 2011/08/04 01:11:24

I have an ASUS PCE-N13 wireless card that I can't seem to get working on centos. I got it working somehow on arch but I can't remember how. I'm fairly sure that I used the rt2860sta driver but I don't see it on the centos wireless page (http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/Wireless#head-f7ffb4b024cc980c9a6d2f735f70e11228139248). Would the RaLink RT61/RT2561 PCI Wireless LAN be what I'm looking for in centos 6?

Asus wireless card not working

Welcome to the CentOS fora.

The recommended reading for all new members starts with the FAQ & Readme First.

Please go and check FAQ #4 at the ELRepo Project's website for details how to obtain the Vendor:Device ID Pairing for your wireless card.

Once you have the details, you could the search the Device IDs page to see if there is an appropriate package available.

Thanks for help!

The link you gave me suggested to use kmod-forcedeth, but I'm not sure this is going to work.

If I run "lspci | grep -i net", shouldn't there be two entries there? One for the ethernet on the motherboard and another for the wireless adapter? Does this mean that the system is not recognizing the wireless card?

Thanks

The forcedeth driver would be appropriate for the wired connection, not the wireless card. :-(

I wonder if it shows up as a USB device? Anything interesting in the output of lsusb ?

Nah nothing, just a media card reader, keyboard, and Linux Foundation 1.1 and 2.0 root rub.

Looking online I found these two links:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r23946485-PCEN13-A-Cheap-Asus-80211-NIC-that-works-well-with-Linux
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless_Setup#rt2860_and_rt2870

The first one talks about how they used Ralink firmware for this card, the second one talks about setting it up in arch linux.

I don't think the firmware makes any difference though if the system doesn't recognize the card to begin with though, right?

Thanks

I concur with your logic. However I am surprised that no sign of the hardware can be found. :-o

I don't like mysteries, so please post the output returned by lspci -nn and lsusb. Don't be concerned about the quantity of information to post -- I've asked for it. ;-)

Unfortunately I think I've narrowed the problem down to a bad PCI slot. :-( I tried both cards in both systems and they both work fine on the good system. I tried an Ubuntu Live CD which picked up the card no problem in the good system, but didn't recognize it in the bad system. I'll be happy to post the output of those commands though if you think there might be something more to it.

Well, as things stand, I don't think there is any need for me to see the output. ;-)

Once you have resolved your hardware issues, see how things go.

If you still have a driver issue, come back to this thread and please post the output returned by an invocation of lspci -nn.
