software raid checking every week

Post by hendranata » 2020/12/22 04:55:09

helo
i notice there is:
/etc/cron,d/raid-check

0 1 * * Sun root /usr/sbin/raid-check

that is running every week..
if we change run once every month.. does it okay?

i want to change once for every month because seems every week sync mdadm eat lot of time and write process.. so my ssd lifetime will be reduced by going time..

maybe any idea?

RAID check does not write, it only reads. It will not reduce your SSD lifespan.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

If things go wrong with your RAID systems, it may take longer for you to know about them and hence the situation may be worse. On the other hand, as long as you monitor the health of the drives (smartd/smartctl) and quickly replace any drives that show indications of failing (typically count of reallocated sectors increasing), the RAID systems are unlikely to go bad.

It all depends on what level of risk you can tolerate.
