Will Centos 6 repos be deleted?

Post by aussie » 2020/11/19 07:35:16

I have tried to upgrade my laptop to Centos 7 but have failed. It installs fine but when I attempt to login I get an error message and it reboots. I'm okay with no more updates, but I worry that I will get a hard drive failure and have to reinstall. Will the Centos 6 repos still be available if I have to reinstall?

You should be able to get it from the vault:
https://vault.centos.org/
What's the error message - maybe someone can help?

Might I suggest that you try the install starting off with the minimal command line only install and on unencrypted filesystems so that you can debug the problem more easily.

And, yes, CentOS 6 repos will be retired and moved to vault.centos.org but if you stay on CentOS 6, there will never be any more updates to it so there isn't really much point in worrying. It will get steadily less and less secure until it gets to the point where it is too dangerous to run.

Hi TrevorH,

This is only a guess, but I think the error of a Firmware Bug is the problem.
[Firmware Bug] the BIOS has corrupted the hw-PMU resources (MSR 38d is b0)
This was the first error and usually the other errors are caused by the first error. Also Centos 7 runs fine on a VMWare virtual machine. The BIOS would be a virtual BIOS in VMWare virtual machine. If this is the problem there would be no hope in getting a BIOS change as the laptop is now 9 years old. I did submit a defect for this problem, but never heard anything back.

I use the laptop for listening to downloaded audio and also watching slideshow lessons hosted by the helix player (realplayer). It is only connected to the internet for about 15 minutes a week to download audios. These are trusted sites, so the risk is low.

That's a pretty normal message and doesn't usually affect anything, it's more for information than anything else.

I tried installing Centos 7.9 but it is even worse and 7.7. With this release there are no error messages. When I attempt to login there is long pause and then the mouse stops responding and the lock led is flashing. I tried to boot "troubleshooting" from the DVD but is just hangs with no messages.
Any suggestions?
