Requesting a sanity check on downloading CentOS 8.

Post by Priest_Apostate » 2020/10/18 01:16:02

I've spent the last few weeks attempting to download CentOS 8 from the locations closest to me (Seattle, WA). Every attempt to do so, however, fails the hash integrity check SHA256:
# CentOS-8.2.2004-x86_64-minimal.iso: 1718616064 bytes
SHA256 (CentOS-8.2.2004-x86_64-minimal.iso) = 47ab14778c823acae2ee6d365d76a9aed3f95bb8d0add23a06536b58bb5293c0
# CentOS-8.2.2004-x86_64-boot.iso: 654311424 bytes
SHA256 (CentOS-8.2.2004-x86_64-boot.iso) = c67876a5602faa17f68b40ccf2628799b87454aa67700f0f57eec15c6ccdd98c
# CentOS-8.2.2004-x86_64-dvd1.iso: 8231321600 bytes
SHA256 (CentOS-8.2.2004-x86_64-dvd1.iso) = c87a2d81d67bbaeaf646aea5bedd70990078ec252fc52f5a7d65ff609871e255

My system's OS: Win 10 Pro, Version 10.0.18362, Build 18362

URL:

MIRRORS:

http://centos.s.uw.edu/centos/8.2.2004/isos/x86_64/
http://repo1.sea.innoscale.net/centos/8 ... os/x86_64/
http://mirror.jaleco.com/centos/8.2.2004/isos/x86_64/

CHECKSUM UTILITIES USED:
• MD5 and SHA Checksum Utility 2.1,
• Certutil from within Windows' Command Prompt

C:\Users\xxxxxx\Desktop\xxxxxx>certutil -hashfile CentOS-8.2.2004-x86_64-minimal.iso SHA256
SHA256 hash of CentOS-8.2.2004-x86_64-minimal.iso:
65b242b5668334a130b8bb45316774f698e607c1b72b85ec8331c47197fcfa04
CertUtil: -hashfile command completed successfully.

I've attempted to use the remaining mirrors, to no avail.
I'm wanting to download a copy of said OS, to install into a Virtualbox Container instance, and use that to improve my skills with Linux.
Any advice/assistance toward that end would be appreciated.

I checked a copy of CentOS-8.2.2004-x86_64-dvd1.iso that I had previously downloaded and its sha256sum agrees with the one that you posted as being correct: c87a2d81d67bbaeaf646aea5bedd70990078ec252fc52f5a7d65ff609871e255.

I then downloaded a copy of CentOS-8.2.2004-x86_64-minimal.iso from the mirror you pointed to http://mirrors.vcea.wsu.edu/centos/8.2. ... os/x86_64/ and that also is correct.

I do not know what causes your download problem but one possible reason is a web proxy in your path that has cached copies of these files and those are wrong.
CentOS 6 will die in November 2020 - migrate sooner rather than later!

CentOS 5 is dead, do not use it.

Not sure how to fix that - if that is the case, that is...
Should that affect ALL of the mirrors tried?

Also tried the link you provided - no improvement (see attachment).

Looks like the torrent worked without an issue. Unsure of why that is the case - but I'll take it!

Before I started torrenting, I cleared the cache on Firefox, Chrome, and IE, and tried again.
I also went over my system to ensure that there wasn't an issue with viruses - there didn't seem to be any.
