Centos 6.10 freezes/hangs on logout, restart or shutdown

Post by Thorp1 » 2020/08/28 15:17:38

Hey there, new to the forum and this is my first post!

Info:
CentOS 6.10
Kernel(s):
2.6.32-754.11.1.el6.i686
4.4.234-1.el6.elrepo.i686

Problem:
System freezes/hangs (completely unresponsive, no key combinations respond) when:
1. You logout of gnome.
2. You try to switch users in gnome.
3. You try to restart from gnome
4. You try to shutdown from gnome.
5. You run init 6 (from terminal in user session, or from ssh remotely)
6. You run init 0 (from terminal in user session, or from ssh remotely)

Other Notes:
1. If I run "reboot" the system reboots normally without issue.
2. If I run the scripts manually from /etc/rc6.d/ they all work fine till I run S01reboot (which hangs)
3. /var/log/messages doesn't have any trace of the crash/hang.
4. GDM logs also don't appear to have any trace of the crash/hang (also, not sure what I'm looking for)
5. I added echo lines to the S01reboot script and they never show up in the log file (echo "some text" >> /var/log/mylog.log) unless I manually run S01reboot. (so, init 6 doesn't seem to ever make it to S01reboot)
6. It seems like it's a problem with Gnome logout, since that happens on a user logout, or a proper shutdown/restart, but not a forced reboot (i.e. the reboot command)

Question:
Where can I dig down to find the root of this problem? I'm stumped

Given that you only have 3 months of life left before you have to change to a newer version, perhaps it would be easier just to forget about CentOS 6 and go straight to a newer version...
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I'm all for that, but this is for a POS system and the vendors software won't be ready for CentOS 7 till at least the end of the year.
I'm mostly just trying to get ideas for where to look since I'm coming up empty handed. I can reproduce the issue on multiple machines, but I can't seem to find the root of it.

Can you access console by pressing crtl+alt+F2?
Can you restart X with crtl+alt+backspace?
Can you SSH into it when it freezes?
Just guessing, it could be a driver problem for the graphics card.
What card and driver?

"Can you access console by pressing crtl+alt+F2?" No
"Can you restart X with crtl+alt+backspace?" No
"Can you SSH into it when it freezes?" No
"What card and driver?" "Intel Corporation HD Graphics 620 (rev 02)" not sure how to find what driver it's using.

This *might* be the driver info:

Did a little more digging, here's the driver info:

Re: Centos 6.10 freezes/hangs on logout, restart or shutdown

I'm all for that, but this is for a POS system and the vendors software won't be ready for CentOS 7 till at least the end of the year.
CentOS 7 is over 6 years old! How much more time do they need? It's not like it's been a secret that CentOS 6 will die in November - there has been a prominent notice on this forum for about a year already.

Which kernel are you actually running? You have a distro kernel there that is 17 versions behind the current one and an ELRepo one that's "only" one version out of date. I'd suggest trying the other one and updating both, especially the distro one.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Update:
We gave up.
I'm sure there is someway to compile a kernel that will work, since CentOS 7 works perfectly fine, but everything I tried failed. (I compiled a number of kernels and tried disabling and enabling a few different modules)
We were able to swap out our POS units with the older models so that's how we worked around it.
