Post by joe@tabone.com » 2020/06/18 17:39:06

New installation on a new laptop, centos 8 installs fully and correctly but on restart it does not boot, as if the booting system is not installed

With what error/symptoms?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

installation goes well. i reboot , laptop tries to find the boot drive, goes through all boot options, USB, HDD1, HDD2, network boot, does not identify the boot on all options, so the error is ''Start PXE over IPv4, Press [ESC] to EXIT ..._ '' if i disable UEFI and reinstall, no change, if i disable network port, then the error changes to the last drive it tried to boot from.

So what steps did you take to do this install? Start from exactly which iso file you downloaded, from where, whether you checked its sha256sum, how you booted from that?

I downloaded the CentOS Linux DVD ISO and tried two sites:
http://centos.mirror.garr.it/centos/8.2 ... 4-dvd1.iso
http://mirrors.ircam.fr/pub/CentOS/8.2. ... 4-dvd1.iso
then i did a usb using RaWrite rw32-setup-1.0.8.0 and booted good from usb
tried also balenaEtcher-Setup-1.5.99 ( tried three times) and also boots good from usb
(in the past I used Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.9.0 but with centos8 it did not work)

The installation starts correctly i am able to set the partitions, time, network config etc, no errors, the installation goes smoothly, then i am asked to reboot, I remove the pendrive, and the hdd does not boot. laptops has primary ssd and a secondard hdd, tried to install on both drives, with the same result

This is an i7-10 CPU laptop, on older laptops Centos8 installs without any problems

the problem is not solved and surely related to UEFI booting, all windows versions work, centos does not boot.

Try NOT removing the pen-drive immediately upon clicking [Reboot]. More work goes on.
Wait until the actual shutdown/reboot happens before pulling it out. {I dislike that also!}

Hope it helps.
