Seeing some network lags with new CentOS 7 install

Post by Hss100 » 2020/05/02 05:04:07

Hi. I had a post in the general section because I thought the lags might be SSH session related but I'm now thinking it might be network after all.

New CentOS 7 install. All the latest Yum packages. i7-8 core system, 9 gig ram, 1tb ssd drive, ASUS PCE-AX58BT wireless card. The system is located about 6 feet from the router.

Seeing network lags every once in a while. Running a ping to my local router, here are the results. Kind of all over the place. Any ideas of things to look for? Any more info I should provide?

Some of these are getting pretty high. 50-60 ms is concerning.

Do you think this is a network issue or is there something else on the system thats causing the network to lag? Selinux is off and the behavior is the same with the firewall on or off.

Can you disconnect from wiifi and connect via a cable and test that way. If the lags are gone then it's your wifi card or network. If they persist then it's not.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Sigh. Yeah, I was trying to avoid the obvious (and being lazy since the pc is buried under my music workstation desk) but yeah, its the card. Connecting with a cable stops all the lag.

Now I need to figure out why the wireless card is having issues... or just buy a different one. Luckily they're not too expensive and the Microcenter by my house is still open.

Anyone have any suggestions on a good wireless internal PCIe card thats certified to work with CentOS?

Thanks.
