CentOS 7 on Threadripper 3990x

Post by NVollmar » 2020/04/30 12:47:17

Just a short question: I would like to know if I can run CentOS 7 on a computer with a Threadripper 3990x. Will it lead to crashes? I have software that is not compatible with CentOS 8, unfortunately.

RHEL 7 officially supports AMD family 0x15 and AMD EPYC 7xx1 (Naples) and AMD EPYC 7xx2 (Rome) from family 0x17. Everything else leads to the kernel printing "Warning: AMD Processor - this hardware has not undergone upstream testing." It's still possible that everything works perfectly fine. I have an old unsupported 4-socket Shanghai machine that runs CentOS 7 without any problems. YMMV.

Benchmarks that compare 7 and 8 on EPYC Rome show that 7 isn't a good choice: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= ... benchmarks

Thank you for your help. I guess, I'll have to try it out. And maybe the next release of the software will support CentOS 8.
