Lag in Putty window - New CentOS 7 install

Post by Hss100 » 2020/04/18 23:01:45

Hi. I'm not sure if this should be in network or general since I'm not sure what the issue is, but please move it if necessary.

I just did a fresh install of CentOS 7 with the Gnome desktop (also updated all the packages) on an older i7 Asus motherboard system and I'm seeing some lag every 3-5 characters when typing in a Putty session from a new i7 Windows 10 system. I'm also seeing the lag when connected to the PC from a Mac console session. Not seeing any lag when typing from a local console window.

Done a bunch of searches and found lots of posts with similar issues but no definite resolutions.

I also have an older i3 laptop setup with the same packages etc and its not having the same issues. Both are running wirelessly into the same router.

They're both about the same distance to the router (about 5 feet).

This is the card I'm using on the system with the problem.

I have not installed specific drivers for the card. CentOS 7 seemed to find it and connect ok on its own.

Internet speed tests are getting about 250Mbps.

Trying to determine if its a network issue or something else. I've also turned off the firewall and Selinux.

Top and htop aren't showing much activity on the processors.

One interesting thing, when doing a ping from the PC to the local router, every 10th ping or so is quite a bit longer than the others. I'm wondering if the longer pings coincide with the typing lags.

time=31.4 ms

Anyone have any ideas on things to check? Other than the pauses, everything else seems fine. Downloading all the packages, etc. through yum goes pretty quick.

Thanks!

Edit: Even stranger. If I actively use the Putty session for a while, the lag seems to eventually go away. If I close the window and open a new one, its back. Also, if I leave the Putty window open and leave the PC for a while, the lag is back when I get back on the existing open session.

Hi,
Just checking if you were using a bluetooth multi device keyboard... This might be the culprit...

Hi. Thx for the reply.

Nope. Keyboard is wired. Its happening from both my desktop with a wired keyboard and a Mac laptop as well.

Anyone else have any ideas on things to check? I'm still stumped on this one. Cant figure out if its network or what. I even did a full reinstall but same issue.

I'd say that ping times up around 50ms on a local network is indicative of some sort of problem there.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Thanks. I'll start digging around in the network logs and configs some more.
