How to install latest version of git on CentOS 8x

Post by rohitbhatintellipaat » 2020/02/12 09:00:48

I used the usual:

yum install git

It did not install the latest version of git on my CentOS 8. How can I update to the latest version of git for CentOS 8? The solution can be applicable to newer versions of CentOS such as CentOS 8.1.1911. Am I using the wrong git command?

CentOS is a rebuild of RHEL and is targeted at stability not keeping up with the bleeding edge. We do not ship the latest of pretty much anything. If you want that then you are using the wrong distro. The current version we ship is

Code: Select all

git.x86_64 2.18.2-1.el8_1 @AppStream
Please see https://access.redhat.com/security/updates/backporting for more information about the packages included and how they are updated by backporting security fixes to the versions we ship.
CentOS 6 will die in November 2020 - migrate sooner rather than later!

CentOS 5 is dead, do not use it.
