Intel Wireless 7265 on CentOS 8 [SOLVED]
Intel Wireless 7265 on CentOS 8 [SOLVED]
OS Level:4.18.0-147.3.1.el8_1.x86_64
Wireless Adapter: 04:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Wireless 7265 [8086:095a] (rev 59)
It appears that the el8 branch seems not to have a module for the Intel Wireless series 8086:095a. There is a 7260 package but it does not contain the files necessary for this particular Wireless adapter to work.
Are there plans on a patch coming up?
Now I am just confined to Ethernet for now until this driver is updated from the el7 (Centos 7) arena.
Thanks kindly in advance

Re: Intel Wireless 7265 on CentOS 8
That's not what grep -i 8086 /lib/modules/4.18.0-147.3.1.el8_1.x86_64/modules.* | grep -i 095a says. That lists a whole load of 8086:095a devices all supported by iwlwifi. The package that I think you are talking about is iwl7260-firmware.noarch and contains the firmware file(s) needed for that family of adapters - also required but the driver itself is iwlwifi which is part of the el8 kernel. It appears that the el8 branch seems not to have a module for the Intel Wireless series 8086:095a
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Re: Intel Wireless 7265 on CentOS 8
Thanks for looking into this.
Let me search for that package and install it. On the el7 arch, it was specifically made for 7265.
I will update you in just a bit. What a PITA to go thru this...
Update my search shows absolutely NOTHING at all. Do I need to reinstall certain packages again?

What's the output from rpm -V kernel-modules-4.18.0-147.3.1.el8_1.x86_64 ?

THANK YOU! Completely solved the problem!
Re: Intel Wireless 7265 on CentOS 8
I'm more amazed that you managed to install a system without that package and then also managed to get it to boot at all! If I try to remove it via yum then it wants to take the kernel package with it...

Re: Intel Wireless 7265 on CentOS 8
Well I am going to write a post about my CentOS8 upgrade experience. It was not very good and caused downtime.
I had to whack the el7 and elrepo kernels because I got my packages are borked up (REALLY BORKED UP!)! So when I got to decently clean system I was able to install (via Rescue) the el8 branch. Afterwards, it was 2 days of fighting with packages and dependencies until I got to a very stable state.
I wasnt sure until I was not able to access the wifi that I still had work to do to achieve a fully working OS.
It was hell, but Trevor your help got me to 97% and for that I am very grateful. Thank you!

Re: Intel Wireless 7265 on CentOS 8 [SOLVED]
There is no upgrade path. It's a reinstall not an upgrade. Check to see what might be broken by running rpm -qa | grep -i el7
