[RESOLVED] = CentOS ISO too big for DvD media

Post by warron.french » 2020/01/03 21:46:14

This file, CentOS-8-x86_64-1905-dvd1.iso, that I downloaded when the ISO first became available.

I can burn the ISO to a flash drive; however, it appears to be larger than a 4.7GB DvD. Was it really intended to be a BluRay DvD? If so, why not mark it as a different filename, perhaps -BDvD- instead of simply "dvd1"?

What do I need to do to install CentOS 8 on a machine that can boot from media, but I cannot get into the BIOS to alter boot order?

It will fit an 8.4GB (dual layer) DVD.

Great! The kind of DvD burner that I don't have.
Thanks,

Are you sure? Pretty much all DVD burners have been DL for about 10 years. DL discs came onto the market in 2003 and drives supporting them in 2004.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I would add that a significant proportion of DVD drives prior to 2003/4 can read a home written dual layer DVD, as all DVD's drives can read stamped dual layer disks. I would point out that this means that dual layer DVD readers predate 64bit x86, so exactly what is the problem with CentOS 8 only supporting an ISO that needs burning on a dual layer disc, bearing in mine 99% of installs will be from USB or virtual media?

I am trying to use a Verbatim DVD+R DL disc (8.5GB) but my software (tried ashampoo, and built in Win10 burner) saying "The type of DVD+R DL is not compatible with the current project."

I'm not sure why this thread says "resolved".
I had a similar problem with first ever install of CentOS 8.0 (I was running Windows 7 at the time).
First check your optical drive spec, e.g. from the original "CD-ROM" or manual, to see which disk types are supported. Some can read dual layer, but not write to them etc etc.
In my case, I didn't want (or could not) buy a dual layer disk, but I did have a BD-RE disk (Blu Ray re-writable).
I downloaded the full CentOS 8.0 DVD.
I inserted a completely blank BD-RE disk into the drive and waited until the light stopped flashing.
In Windows 7, I right-clicked The CentOS 8.0 DVD and selected "Burn to Disk".
It started to write to the disk...
When finished, I was somewhat amazed that I was able to use this as a UEFI bootable disk, and was able to install CentOS 8.0 onto multiple machines.
