Missing packages

Post by PCrighton2 » 2019/10/29 19:19:09

I had been hoping to use Centos 8 to update my CCTV / Backup / VPN server, but trying to install things, I find that they are not there.
https://forums.zoneminder.com/viewtopic ... +8#p112000 reports that there are things that need building in EPEL, and browsing EPEL I have identified that ddclient, easy-rsa and nload are all in the EPEL 7 repository, but missing from the EPEL 8 repository (including testing and playground).

Does this mean that they are not going to be included or will they soon appear?

Does anyone have any idea (from knowledge or typical history) how long it will/might be before more packages are built for EPEL 8? I appreciate that these are probably all being built by volunteers, but I'm just after an idea how long I should wait. If it's not going to be in the next week or two then I am going to abandon Centos 8 and go back to Centos 7 as I know that all the things I need are in there. My plan had been to use the latest for the best future proofing.

The interface to EPEL is via bugzilla.redhat.com in the Fedora EPEL section. You can search there for the packages you are interested in and see if anyone has already raised a request for them to be added. That might give you the current status and tell you why it's not available. If there is no existing ticket then raise one.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

What about packages which were included in CentOS 7 without EPEL but are no longer present in CentOS 8?

Thinking of dovecot-pigeonhole, which is needed for sieve filtering and was shipped with CentOS 7. Currently, I cannot find it in CentOS 8.

I'm pretty sure that that one is listed in the RHEL 8 release notes as deprecated/removed. No idea what you're meant to do instead...

Thanks for the hint. Indeed, there is a document which lists dovecot-pigeonhole as removed. So I will probably have to wait until the dovecot mirror includes packages for CentOS 8. Or could there be a chance, that it will be included in EPEL?

You can always check bugzilla.redhat.com to see if there is anything there about it. Perhaps there is already a request to have it in EPEL? Or to put it back in the main distro? It does seem like a strange package to remove given that it's a) tiny and b) comes out of the same SRPM build as the rest of the dovecot packages.

I've just filled this bug report (over missing nsca-client). Hope I did it right :)

Just an update for anyone facing the same problem:

dovecot-pigeonhole "is planned to be included in next RHEL8 update".
