Post by sjkeerthi » 2019/09/26 07:08:12

Hi

After the CentOS 8 release I been looking for the minimal iso image which I could not find.
Is this been removed or will it be added later?

We Love CentOS

Thanks,
Keerthi

HI,

Simply go ahead and download the ISO, if you don't have bandwidth/space constraints.

In the installation screen you could choose 'Minimal' installation.

That's it.

Thanks,
Dawn Mathews

So download 6+ GB instead of the 900MB that CentOS7 Minimal ISO provided?

I really didn't understand. Yes lets consider that the bandwidth but not the space constraints.
Minimal give us quick simple download with limited packages which helps to spin the VM very fast.

Even the UI show the Minimal Setup but for that why should I have to load 6GB rather than 900MB.

Well, until a minimal image is provided, you could do it with the boot image (534M) too, if you´ve got an internet connection with the server...

I used to have a case where I had to use minimal ISO via IPMI at a distance of 20000+ km away.
Network Speed was so slow, that a minimal ISO took 15min to load and access the initial menu.

With a 6GB+ DVD - recovery would take years...

It's not advertised but can be found through checking the directory of the mirrors. Here is one example for CentOS Stream (533 MB)

Hi,

I really understand and agree to your point. But for the time being this is our only option I believe. I could not find a minimal ISO for CentOS 8 anywhere from trusted sources.

Please do share, if you come up with one.

Thanks and regards,
DMJoh

Also, the 60 second cooldown when booting the image - should be reduced to the same setting in Centos 7.

That's not the minimal iso image. It's the old netinstall image and requires access to a full yum repo online.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
