HELP! Hardrive keeps going into readonly mode - SMART TEST RESULTS IN

Post by richeerichhh » 2019/08/28 22:40:23

Hey guys, I can't seem to figure out if my hard drive is failing or if an app is causing it to go into read only mode. Its a 2TB Western Digital. The only app that actively uses it is plexmediaserver. I keep having to unmount it, scan it with fcsk and remount it again for it be writable. My first thought was that it was failing but the smart values look okay I did get a

Code: Select all

SMART Error Log Version: 1
Warning: ATA error count 23185 inconsistent with error log pointer 4
When I scanned it with smartmon tools so I did a long test.

Code: Select all

sudo smartctl --test=long /dev/sdc
After a couple of days I checked it and nothing looked bad except for more information on the error. Here are the results

sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdc

Code: Select all

smartctl 6.5 2016-05-07 r4318 [x86_64-linux-3.10.0-862.el7.x86_64] (local build)

Is there anything I can do to fix this error and stop the HD from going into read-only mode? Or is it safe to keep unmounting and remounting it? Help!
I use CentOS 7 and love it :D

197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 76
9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 029 029 000 Old_age Always - 52082
You have 76 pending sectors - ones that have been found to be faulty by the drive and marked unreadable. Next time those sectors are written, the drive will assign a new one from its pool of spares. It's not a good sign of drive health, probably one of the few that SMART tells you about that's much use.

The other statistic there is the power on hours: 52082 = 2170 days = 5.94 years. Getting quite long in the tooth for a spinning rust drive.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Gotcha so it's just old. I guess it's time to replace it. Thanks for the response :)
