Which cloud server?

Post by MartinR » 2019/08/14 15:16:13

EPEL provides two cloud servers:
  • NextCloud 10.0.4
  • OwnCloud 9.1.5
If starting from scratch on a small system supporting CentOS, Windows 7/8/10 and Android which is the best? Advice please.

I guess in both cases Epel packages versions that are long past EOL. I recommend using neither.

nextcloud current version is 16 and 10.x is from 2016.

owncloud current version 10.2 and 9.1.5 is from 2017.

owncloud appear to have their own repo for CentOS though I cannot vouch for its quality.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Thanks both. I take the point about being down rev, but I do like to stick to CentOS, EPEL and ElRepo as far as possible. Presumably any security issues will have been backported, so missing a few features is the main problem. I'll investigate OwnCloud's repository though.

Next question: if I were to use the latest versions, is there any significant difference between the two, or for that matter should I be looking at a different package all together? Thanks for any advice.

I would not depend on the EPEL maintainer backporting security updates. Some do, usually the ones that are on RH's payroll but others do not either because they can't be bothered, don't know it's required or have no idea how. If this is for internal use only then perhaps you might live with being backlevel.

Owncloud's own rpms have about zero quality.

I have an owncloud instance running, basically put together as outlined at the end of this thread:

Recently I have switched remi's php in single-version mode to 7.2 and did a manual uptate to owncloud's latest production release. It basically went as expected without major problems.

Thanks for that link. It's put me right off using ownCloud's repos, I'm definitely sticking to EPEL.
