Windows users Learning CentOS as first Linux OS

Post by TovinoThomas » 2019/07/31 06:54:34

Need to make my self my knowledgeable, I don't know any Linux and figured I should start learning how to be a linux admin along with windows.
I've been reading around and came to the conclusion that CentOS would be the best place to start since it follows along with Red Hat in the enterprise realm. Now I just need to reference materials that will actually teach me what I need to know in the event I get thrown in to a *Nix enviroment, I won't land face first into the cement. Not trying to be a pro but good enough that I can be a linux admin.

You did mention Red Hat. Therefore:

An excellent guide for users that are new to Linux can be found at http://rute.gerdesas.com - while this is not official project documentation it is a well-regarded general introduction to Linux and may be of help. For an introduction to the bash shell take a look at http://linuxcommand.org/lc3_learning_the_shell.php
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I would throw in courses available in lynda.com. It is a course you will have to pay for but the price is minimal. Another site I can't suggest enough - linux academy. They have dedicated red hat tracks for certification, the cost of linux academy is well worth the price given what your money gets you. A wide range of courses from python programming to introductions to AWS and Azure to linux certifications. Check them out - https://linuxacademy.com/
