[Update] Can't get HP4652 installed on Centos 6 x64

Post by silverjw » 2019/07/16 18:36:47

Hello,h

I’m relatively new to Linux and CentOS, so I’m hoping that someone here can help. I am trying to run an HP Deskjet 4652 All-in-1 printer/scanner/fax on an 802.11 connection, from a CentOS 6.10 x86_64 system. In the hp-setup, it is also tried as a USB connected device, but fails.

The hardware “sees” the device :

[jerry@localhost Downloads]$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 058f:6362 Alcor Micro Corp. Flash Card Reader/Writer
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 03f0:d911 HP, Inc
[jerry@localhost Downloads]$

I believe I need hplip-3.19.6, but the latest HPLIP that YUM can find is v3.14.6 :

[jerry@localhost Downloads]$ yum list hplip
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, refresh-packagekit, security
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
* base: mirror.clarkson.edu
* extras: mirrors.maine.edu
* updates: sjc.edge.kernel.org
Installed Packages
hplip.x86_64 3.14.6-4.el6.1 @base
[jerry@localhost Downloads]$

[jerry@localhost Downloads]$ yum list hplip-gui
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, refresh-packagekit, security
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
* base: mirror.clarkson.edu
* extras: mirrors.maine.edu
* updates: sjc.edge.kernel.org
Installed Packages
hplip-gui.x86_64 3.14.6-4.el6.1 @base
[jerry@localhost Downloads]$

As indicated, I installed these :

[jerry@localhost Downloads]$ rpm -qa hplip
hplip-3.14.6-4.el6.1.x86_64
[jerry@localhost Downloads]$

[jerry@localhost Downloads]$ rpm -qa hplip-gui
hplip-gui-3.14.6-4.el6.1.x86_64

I then ran hp-setup :

[jerry@localhost Downloads]$ hp-setup

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.14.6)
Printer/Fax Setup Utility ver. 9.0

Searching on USB bus...
error: No devices found on bus: usb

Done.
[jerry@localhost Downloads]$

But hp-setup does NOT find the device.

After several hours of internet searching, I believe I need the latest version of HPLIP, that being 3.19.6 – which includes support for this printer.

I downloaded and tried to install this, but there is no .rpm version available. There IS a .run and I tried it, but it failed saying it does NOT work on CentOS – and promptly locked-up my machine (so no log of that) and I had to hit the reset button.

This leaves me asking :

Is there – or will there soon be – an .rpm for 3.19.6 ?

If not, is there – or will there soon be – a .run for 3.19.6 that will work on CentOS 6.10 x86_64 ?

If none of the above, is there a work-around I just haven’t found yet ?

Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated !

Incidentally, I searched the 3.19.6 files for a .ppd for the 4650, and did not find one… 4610, 4620, 4640 and 4670, but no 4650.

Regards,

Jerry

Resolved – just don’t ask me HOW.

The printer was attached via USB and came up today. It is now also working via WiFi, after I gingerly removed the cable.

It named itself correctly as a 4650 series, but also says it’s a 4630 series Hpijs in the Make/Model line of the configuration panel. I don’t even pretend…

It seems desperation and three days worth of flinging mighty handfuls of monkey poop can work miracles.

Thank you to all who read my post about the problem, and at least thought about what the issue might be. I appreciate your time.

Best regards,

Jerry

M-U-C-H better solution :

Download 3.18.6

Follow instructions on :

https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... ros/centos

M-U-C-H happier with the results.
