Upgrading CentOS to a newer version

If I have to upgrade to a newer version of CentOS (say CentOS 8 for example). Then will I have to reinstall all over the CentOS installation? Or, a simple 'yum update && upgrade' will do?

Running yum update will get you to the latest in any given major version number but will not move you between versions. So yum update will take you from 7.x to 7.y but not to 8.x. There is no upgrade path from one major version to the next, it's a reinstall.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

So, now if CentOS 8 is released then I have reinstall. Anyway, thanks for the info.

Or you can continue using 7. It will still be supported for many years. Whatever suits your situation best.
