I'm almost 80 and a long time Ubuntu newby (like 8years), though I've tried loads of other distros on old computers - Puppy fan for a few years. I just thought I'd take a change. CentOS DVD came my way and I've been here for a couple of days - might see you later........................sarum

That made me laugh, because I WAS thinking about the stones on the level 10 predatory creeper blatantly starting a thread and blowing his cover in the process.

I'm a 32, been using CentOS for the past couple of days. Have just gotten off a LONG 12 year stint with Gentoo/Funtoo. I loved that distro, but there were always issues with it. I'd have issues with updates constantly, and in my opinion, their stable flavor wasn't REALLY that stable. I didn't imagine myself doing an upgrade on a server to get security patches, and then also running into issues with packages not compiling nice because of a use flag that was being weird in JUST this one version of a package.

I have been doing some research, and gave openSUSE a try last week. I liked many things, but ultimately, although upgrading would have probably been easier from one version to the next, the package repos were all over the place and seemed messy.

So, I'm giving CentOS a try. So far very happy, got all my necessary desktop needs met, and am getting myself acquainted with the OS that I will be using for a company project on a couple of servers. Plus, useful for any certifications that I may use in the near future!

Win-Win-Win! :D

Although I've heard that upgrading from one major release to another CAN be quite painful.

Hi ! to all.
I am introduced to opensource through a friend in 2006 almost immediately with the purchase of my new Desktop. I tasted my first linux OS with mandriva linux. After a number of distro hopping, I find myself comfortable with debian based and redhat based opensource OS. After a lot of learning with these distros now, I am using Debian Wheezy and CentOS 7. I take this opportunity to thank the team associated with these two GIANTS of OPENSOURCE SYSTEM. :D

I am 41 years old. Used Macs since the early 90s and only discovered Linux a few years ago. Worked in numerous non-IT jobs as a IT-savvy "gifted amateur" but looking at going towards a sysadmin direction. Given the RH/CentOS presence in the IT sector I popped CentOS 7 onto a virtualbox and signed up for a few basic Linux courses. Baby steps but I am already liking the command line. Have no concept of how this all scales up to running loads of servers, nodes etc. In short: I'm 41 and been using CentOS for a year.

I'm 58... yeah, sorta old but not as old as some! I have been using Linux since about 1996, CentOS since about 2005 or 2006... the date is a little murky, I transitioned from White Box sometime around then.

I find it kind of interesting how many of us here are in their 30s and 40s (20s also) and are able to frimly grasp working with CentOS where there are people younger or also same age that are not able to understand anything when it comes to Linux or computers. The general "myth" is as you get older you start to forget how to do things and do them as well, and people who are younger better understand technology, which can be true to an extent but I find that in computers its a grey area...and especially by this poll. This brings up the question of is something really easy, is linux easy to use, or does it just come down to how smart the person is at whatever area of the brain using the computer works. Its kind of interesting.

Given the majority are in the 40+ club, it may be down to the fact that computers are ubiquitous now and younger people have grown up with them. When I was a kid, there where a very limited amount of computing resources available. Now, most people have more computing power in their mobile phone than was in my first computer. Perhaps growing up in a world where computers are everywhere makes one less interested????
