yum problem

Post by charliemops » 2014/10/02 14:36:44

Hi all,

Today I've had some trouble with yum. I've fixed them all but I can not solve the last one. Please help.

Code: Select all

$ yum update
Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=5&arch=x86_64&repo=addons error was
[Errno 14] HTTP Error 504: Gateway Time-out
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: addons. Please verify its path and try again
I have CentOS 5.5 (2.6.18-194.el5) (before you ask: I know, it's an old version. No, I can't upgrade)
The machine has direct access to the web (no proxy & co.).
The default gateway is correctly configured.
I am able to download packages with wget.

Maybe there is an issue with repository's path? (If it is so, I don't know how to add correct path and where)

Thank you.

Disable the addons repo either by editing /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo or by using --disablerepo=addons on the command line.

Your next step is to update that box! 5.5 is 4.5 years old and so full of security vulnerabilities that you could drive a truck through it. Your kernel allows root access within about 2 seconds.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Thank you Trevor,

I have the same error either with --disablerepo=addons:

Code: Select all

$ sudo yum --disablerepo=addons update
Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=5&arch=x86_64&repo=os error was
[Errno 14] HTTP Error 504: Gateway Time-out
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: base. Please verify its path and try again
or editing /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo:

Code: Select all

$ vi /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo
[...]
#packages used/produced in the build but not released
#[addons]
#name=CentOS-$releasever - Addons
#mirrorlist=http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=$releasever&arch=$basearch&repo=addons
#baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/$releasever/addons/$basearch/
#gpgcheck=1
#gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-5
[...]
After we've fixed this, can you be so kind to show me how to face the next step?

[Errno 14] HTTP Error 504: Gateway Time-out
I'm pretty sure that you have a proxy server between you and the internet and that's an error from that. Maybe it's a transparent proxy so you don't even know it's there...

Hi Trevor,
I'm behind a firewall but the network administrator has given the server free access to the http and ftp protocols.
In fact, before this configuration, running yum update I was receiving the messagge "forbidden access".

Run wget "http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=5 ... 64&repo=os" and make sure that it can connect and retrieve the list of mirrors. If it cannot then your network admin did something wrong.

I think it's ok:
