Linux Konsole does not show german Umlaute

Post by Deteros » 2014/08/15 11:03:06

The configured language is german:
$ localectl
System Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8
VC Keymap: de
X11 Layout: de
X11 Model: pc105

and the kde konsole shows german Umlaute as expected.

But after changing to the linux Konsole, for example with Ctrl-Alt-F2,
the german Umlaute öäüß are not shown correctly.

Typing 'loadkeys de-latin1' fixes the problem.

However, this is a bug - Fedora 20 for example configures
the keymap correctly.

Does someone know how to reconfigure CentOS, such that
it enables the german keymap at startup?

Some more research shows that the keyboard map is configured
in /etc/vconsole.conf, but this does not help
KEYMAP=de-latin1
FONT=latarcyrheb-sun16
Any idea?

To get this fixed you would need to raise a bugzilla on bugzilla.redhat.com. CentOS do not fix bugs in code, only in packaging so if you want it fixed you will need it fixed in RHEL.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

For F20 this is tracked at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=994180.

If I got it right, a workaround is to edit /etc/vconsole.conf and /etc/locale.conf. Then recreate your initramfs with 'dracut -f' and reboot.
