VMWare Server 2.0.2 problem after update to 5.7

Post by tiger_orange » 2011/10/10 13:13:25

Hi,

Hi,

I was running a VM-Ware Server 2.0.2 on an CentOS 5.6 with no problem (ok, there was a patch with the glibc, otherwise the virtual guests crashed, but that was working fine after the work around). Now, after an update on CentOS 5.7 the vmware-hostd won´t start up, so I´m not able to connect to the server to start any virtual guest. When I try to start the hostd at the commant shell this is what happends:

#/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-hostd -a -d -u /etc/vmware/hostd/config.xml

/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-hostd: error while loading shared libraries: libvmomi.so.1.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

the lib is present:

]# locate libvmomi.so.1.0

/usr/lib/vmware/vmacore/libvmomi.so.1.0

Any suggestions are welcome

Thanks and best regards

VMWare Server 2.0.2 problem after update to 5.7

VMware Server has passed EOL and is no longer supported. Please try another virtualization method. The only one I can personally vouch for is VirtualBox which can run VMware images.

KVM one of the choices mentioned in the first link I supplied, is now TUV's default for RHEL6, and seems quite popular. Having a serious look at it is on my ToDo list but has not bubbled up to the top. It appears from the RHEL-6.2 beta that a lot of changes are in the works, so personally I'll hold off a while.

Hello,

I am suffering the same problem. I think I found a possible solution. VMware Server 2 starts without problems on my system recently installed with Centos 5.7. I have patched VMware with a glibc from RHEL 5.3 and I have altered the vmware-hostd script as you mention but the problem persists. After several tests I have found that I have started vmware-hostd program (no script) only configuring LD_LIBRARY_PATH with /usr/lib/vmware/vmacore. In this path is libvmomi.so.1.0. If vmware-hostd program starts without the enviroment configuration made by wmware-hostd script then the problem maybe is in that script. I have unpatched vmware-hostd script and the service has started without problems so maybe the problems with the glibc have been solved.

I have only tested the virtual machine creation but it has been satisfactory.

Your initial post was a big clue.

Regards.

I'm running vmware-server on 5.7 without any trouble. AFAIK >= 5.6 the glibc patch is no longer needed infact it has to be removed or hostd will crash again.

Agreed. The fix for 5.5/5.6 as described in http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=4318 was still in place here. Reversed the fix and it was solved.

P.S. The technical answer to the initial thread starter was also, if you omit setting the library path (LD_LIBRARY_PATH) as the scripts do, vm will not find those files.
