hardware requirement for asterisk

It takes very little power to handle just 5 extensions. Any recent ix86 will be fine. Heck they even have the embedded asterisks...

Don't compile unless you need too. You can google search for "asterisk centos howto" and get some help like: http://www.kaliphonia.com/content/linux/how-to-install-asterisk-on-centos-server or http://swik.net/CentOS+asterisk
Basically, the repository "atrpms" is what you will need. Please pay close attention to the info from http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories and http://wiki.centos.org/PackageManagement/Yum/Priorities
For any Asterisk setup after, you may be better off looking to the Asterisks mailing lists. Also note thatif Asterisk is the *only* thing you really want (or have limited skills), then you may be better off using custom distro's like http://www.trixbox.org/ or http://www.asterisk.org/asterisknow or http://www.astlinux.org/ (google for others).

hi!!!

My production system:
*Pentium 4 2.0 Ghz
*1 Gb Ram
*Centos 5.4 32 bits, asterisk 1.4 + mysql + apache (for some call report tools) + asteriskgui
*10 simoultaneous sip channels, encoded alaw and ulaw
*about 25 sip registrations, 20 at the office 5 via vpn

for 5 pstn channels with a standard pc you can run it very well!

i hope it helps
