RHEL -> CentOS Seamless Upgrade Path (especially from 6b)

Post by gordan » 2010/05/01 10:08:27

Is there a plan to have a relatively painless upgrade path from RHEL6b to CENTOS6? After such a long wait for RHEL6, I would very much like to be able to simply:

# rpm -e redhat-release
# rpm -Uvh centos-release.x86_64.rpm
# yum update

and have the installation converted to CentOS whe that becomes available.

I have done something similar with RHEL6b and F12 repositories (including base, updates and rpmfusion), and I have yet to see a single thing that doesn't "just work" when updating to the latest version of whatever is available from the union of all the repositories, which is fantastic, but it would be nice if the relevant packages (release, artwork, etc.) were set up in the CentOS repositories specifically in such a way that they replace their equivalent RHEL packages (or Fedora 12 packages for that matter, for those of us who have applied such hacks as what I described to get extra repositories on RHEL6b).

Any chance of this happening?

As you probably know, there is no officially supported path even for RHEL beta to RHEL final.

For migrating RHEL to CentOS, this CentOS wiki has some information (near the bottom):
