Why not upgrade?

Post by mattboston » 2005/01/13 14:57:30

For all of my IT life I've been under the belief that when something new comes out, it's time to upgrade to the latest and greatest. Upgrades usually have new features and more benefits.

So my question is, why don't people upgrade to the latest and greatest when it becomes available and is considered stable? Why are some users still on legacy versions of linux (CentOS2, RedHat 7, 8 or 9)? Or any software no matter if it's Linux or Windows or whatever?

Well, most of the time it is software driven for me ...

I am running a ERP database solution that requires Oracle 8.1.7.4 and HPUX 11.0 .... The server executables are only compiled to run on the version of HPUX and with that version of Oracle ... it costs $75,000.00 to have the software upgraded to HPUX-11i and Oracle 9.2.0.5. So, we will use the current solution.

That is probably what it is with most systems ... the software doesn't work with newer versions of the OS.

Throw in software costs and M$ licenses for anything windows ...

I understand the Windows (commercial) side of the business having worked for many companies and the cost involved in upgrading. But in the Linux world, if you choose a free distro, why would you remain on a legacy version if your software will work on the newest version? Take someone that is using RHEL2.1, and wants to migrate to CentOS2. If their software runs on CentOS3(RHEL3) why not just upgrade to version 3? Or CentOS4 when it comes out?

If the software works on the newer distro, I would certianly upgrade...but that is just me.
