gnome login screen user is obscured

Post by iwishitwouldwork » 2021/08/11 12:53:22

I patched recently. Maybe there was a readme that I missed. But my google-fu has not yielded an answer.

The gnome login screen has always obscured the password when logging in. But now it's obscuring the username at login -- but not always. It does this if I log out and log in rapidly, whatever rapidly means in this situation, but after some time -- again, whatever some time means -- the user is shown in regular text as I log in. I have no idea what the "timeout" is. I've looked for a way to turn this off.

Is this some new security feature? I suppose people wanted this. I don't. It has a "security through obscurity" feel that I don't appreciate. I grant that in a multi-user office someone could observe your username, and I can see how that would matter sometimes. But on my home machines I'd prefer not to do this.

Or am I just weird?

j.
