Learning material recommendations?

Post by amd » 2020/11/11 21:13:03

Hello,

I purchased a centos8 based VPS a few months ago from a service provider called Contabo (recommended by a friend) and currently feeling a bit lost on where best to start after I just setup key based ssh authentication :D

In fact I don't have significant experience with System administration in general and I am looking for the best resources to get up to speed before I start using the VPS on a real project. For context, my shift to Contabo came after a disappointing experience with a cloud based solution I tried for some time to end up stuck with frustrating restrictions and a pricing I find unjustified if I just put the necessary time to learn.

I need to get up to speed in the following areas with up-to-date material:
- Networking / DNS configuraiton
- Best Security practices
- System backup and monitoring tools
- Other recommended topics if any

Any tips: urls/books/videos that are up-to-date and ideally with reasonable pricing would be greatly appreciated.

I intend to use my VPS's to host java based web apps and postresql databases.

Thank you

CentOS 8 is derived from RHEL 8. Therefore, Red Hat's documentation: https://access.redhat.com/documentation ... e_linux/8/
should be "up to date", although some details do differ between CentOS and RHEL.

I was about to go with CentOS wiki, last update April 2020. Is there a good reason to go for RHEL 8 docs instead?

Thanks for the recommendation by the way.

Answering my own question, the CentOS wiki here refers to broken URLs... pretty much useless. RHEL 8 docs are the only viable way to go I guess.

Do feel free to mail the centos-docs mailing list and ask for edit ability on those pages to correct them.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Strangely enough the urls are now fixed. I do not feel qualified to edit/correct documentation at the moment, but I'll be happy to do so when I build up the necessary knowledge.
