no network available 8-Stream when installing on Asus P6X58D-E

Post by ron7000 » 2023/02/16 23:32:01

had CentOS 7.9 installed on older asus motherboard. It is an Asus P6X58D-E.
During install from usb stick which went flawless graphically minus this problem, the network part showed no network devices available.
With the system up and running, under Settings - Network there is nothing. I don't know what to do.

if I do an "lspci | grep -i net" it shows

05:00.0 Ethernet Controller Marvell Technology Group LTD 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev12)

Is there a way I can get wired network working on this? It worked under CentOS 7.9. thanks.

On CentOS 7 that is supported by the sky2 kernel module. There is a kmod-sky2 in ELRepo that can be used to add the missing driver in RHEL 8, Rocky 8, Alma 8, OEL 8 but not Stream 8.

I saw your question about Stream 8 in another topic and now might be a good time to switch to one of the other rebuilds other than Stream. Then you can use ELRepo to add the driver for the card. Download the right file from ELRepo, sneakernet it to the machine and install it using yum install /path/to/kmod-sky2-1.30-8.el8_7.elrepo.x86_64 and then you should have access to the network.

Make sure that once you have a network, you download and install the correct elrepo-release.rpm file to add ELRepo as a yum repository so that you get automatic yum updates to kmod-sky2 in the future.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

you mean get CentOS specifically 8.7" ? If so, how, cause when I went to the download mirror list all I saw available was "Stream" or do I just need to look harder?

And are you also saying that if I did go with RHEL 8.7 on my P6X58D motherboard, I would have had the same no network device found problem?

thanks.

No. He wrote: "RHEL 8, Rocky 8, Alma 8, OEL 8, or one of the other rebuilds of RHEL 8".
The CentOS Stream 8 is a not rebuild of RHEL 8.

Yes, but for RHEL 8 and all proper rebuild distros of it there is package kmod-sky2 in the ELRepo repository. That solves the network issue.

There is no CentOS 8.7, it's dead. There will be no more CentOS 8 or 9 (or 10+). The future for people wanting a clone of RHEL is Rocky/Alma/OEL. CentOS is dead, Red Hat killed it. All that's left of CentOS is a permanent beta product called Stream that suffers continual bugs and problems.

And, yes, all RHEL 8 and all clones and all el9 versions do not support that card out of the box. You need to have a way to add the support back in and ELRepo provide that but only for RHEL 8/9 and the clones thereof, not for Stream which uses a different and incompatible kernel.
