qemu-kvm process over 100 %

Post by sbdcunha » 2021/12/21 10:36:37

Dear All,

I have done a new installation of Centos 8.3 X64 Bit and then I installed Libvirtd for KVM Virtualization.
Now when I installed a new guest VM I see that the qemu-kvm process goes to 100 %
I have attached a screen shot of Top
Now If I shut the VM the CPU utilzation is 1 to 2 %
attached is the screen shot when VM guest is running

appreciate your advice and help

regards

simon

Do you have hardware virtualization turned on in your BIOS settings?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

CentOS Linux is currently based on RHEL 8.5. Why have you used an old image, or more importantly:
have you ran dnf upgrade to get all the latest content?

PS. At this point any CentOS Linux 8 install is moot, since it has EOL this month.
CentOS Stream 8, RHEL 8 (or anything derived from it, for example AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, Oracle Linux) would elongate the install's lifetime.

You could ask from Rocky community too. https://rockylinux.org/ shows that they have forum, mattermost, irc, mailing lists, ...
They have their incentive to make users happy and are as likely to have encountered similar issues on CentOS as people on this forum.

I'd turn off VT-d and leave "Intel (R) VT" enabled. VT-d is used for attaching entire devices to virtual machines.
