WIRED CONNECTION stops working on CentOS 8.3

Post by jtome7 » 2021/05/24 17:18:42

CentOS 8.3 with kernel 4.18.0-240.22.1.el8_3.x86_64

The WIRED NETWORK CONNECTION stops working after a while if I go away from a web page to browse on another web page. Ping also stops or hangs with no good info showing up from a traceroute, either:

[root@falcon ~]# ping amazon.com
ping: amazon.com: Name or service not known
[root@falcon ~]#
[root@falcon ~]# traceroute amazon.com
amazon.com: Name or service not known
Cannot handle "host" cmdline arg `amazon.com' on position 1 (argc 1)

The only way I can immediately restore the connection is to use the Gnome Settings GUI for Network then click the "Off / On" slider as if to pump the connection or re-start it again ... and again ...and again ... every 10 minutes or so. None of the commandline networking commands have worked to re-start the network connection ( such as "systemctl restart NetworkManager" but only the GUI works for me. WHAT IS THE GUI DOING? WHAT NETWORK COMMANDS are being issued when I click the "On / Off" slider switch for a wired connection on the Gnome Settings Network GUI? And, WHY do the network connections just fade away ... they go high & dry ... just hang.

Read your logs.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

If it were me, it sounds like a 'lease' issue. Are you using DHCP to connect to your network, or did you manually assign s 'static' address to your network adapter? {I'm NO expert - just trying to help figure this out}.
