[Solved] Cannot connect to WPA Enterprise/PEAP/MSCHAPv2 (No CA)

Post by Compeador » 2020/11/03 04:58:00

Hi all Linux pros... I'm trying to connect to my company's wifi that using 802.1x PEAP and MSCHAPv2 without CA as the title said.

I've successfully connected with my Android smartphone but no luck with my CentOS 8 laptop. I'm 120% sure I entered the correct username and password, but it keeps popup ask me to re-auth.

My wifi settings:

IPv4, IPv6, DNS and Routes are all set to Auto

I digged into networkmanager's log and here's the output:

Code: Select all

we have the same configuration here and our windows RADIUS permits more then one connection with the same user, i think it is a stupid microsoft mistake without solution

i don´t know if your infrastructure admits the same or it has some limitation to connect your phone and notebook with the same user

After a very long search and attempts I finally managed to solved the issue.

It turns out seems NetworkManager is very picky about the AP and it'll disconnect as soon as changed so it can't be used hence need to be turned off:

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl stop NetworkManager
and create a wpa_supplicant.conf file (or edit in etc/wpa_supplicant) with following content:

Code: Select all

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant  # should already exists
ctrl_interface_group=wheel              # should already exists

network={
    scan_ssid=1
    ssid="YOUR_WIFI_SSID"
    mode=0
    auth_alg=OPEN
    key_mgmt=WPA-EAP
    eap=PEAP
    identity="YOUR_AUTH_USERNAME"
    password=hash:YOUR_HASHED_PASSWORD_BCZ_PLAINTEXT_IS_DANGEROUS
    phase1="peaplabel=0"
    phase2="auth=MSCHAPV2"
    priority=10
}
and the hashed password can be generated by:

Code: Select all

echo -n "YOUR PLAINTEXT PASSWORD" | iconv -t utf16le | openssl md4
then using wpa_supplicant to connect, the command I used:

Code: Select all

// `wlo1` the name is my wifi interface
wpa_supplicant -i wlo1 -c ./wpa_supplicant.conf -Dwext -Dnl80211 -d
finally obtain the new ip via dhcp:

Code: Select all

sudo dhclient wlo1
profit
