Rookie: Ethernet interface for VMware NAT link not coming up

Post by credible58 » 2020/10/09 15:35:33

I run Centos 8 VM on VWware Workstation Pro 15 running on Windows 10. The Centos machine has a single Ethernet adapter - a VMware NAT adapter. When I start the VM the NAT adapter is connected to the VM but the network doesn't come up (no Internet access). Internet access on the host Windows 10 machine works fine. I tried a few commands:

Code: Select all

[root@jupiter xxxxxxx]# ip addr show dev ens33
2: ens33: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc noop state DOWN group default qlen 1000
    link/ether 00:0c:29:01:d9:f0 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
[root@jupiter xxxxxxx]# ip link set ens33 up
[root@jupiter xxxxxxx]# ip addr show dev ens33
2: ens33: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc fq_codel state UP group default qlen 1000
    link/ether 00:0c:29:01:d9:f0 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    inet6 fe80::20c:29ff:fe01:d9f0/64 scope link
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
The /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ens33 looks like this:

Code: Select all

TYPE=Ethernet
PROXY_METHOD=none
BROWSER_ONLY=no
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
DEFROUTE=yes
IPV4_FAILURE_FATAL=yes
IPV6INIT=yes
IPV6_AUTOCONF=yes
IPV6_DEFROUTE=yes
IPV6_FAILURE_FATAL=no
IPV6_ADDR_GEN_MODE=stable-privacy
NAME=ens33
UUID=1252b222-f85e-478b-ab7d-3ced8de0edae
DEVICE=ens33
ONBOOT=yes
The interface was working fine. Then I lost power to my PC and since then I just can't seem to get the VM's Ethernet interface to become active.

* How can I get the interface to come up?
* Why is it not coming up on boot?

BTW: Running tcpdump on ens33 shows that there are no DHCP Discover packets flowing on that interface.

Thanks and regards...Paul

What do you get with these (particularly the last one):

Code: Select all

nmcli
nmcli d s
nmcli c s
nmcli c s ens33

Hi @jlehtone,

Thanks for the response. Bizarrely, I went to my PC yesterday and the Ethernet adapter in the VM was up with an IP address, and now all is working OK. I didn't do anything further after this post and so I have no idea what the cure was.

If the problem happens again I'll post the results of those commands.

Thanks and regards...Paul
