network-scripts deprecated :-(

Post by addw » 2021/01/20 00:14:14

I have just noticed that network-scripts is deprecated and I am being told to use Network Manager.
This is a retrograde step. I use network-scripts on servers; once set up the network config never changes. The config files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ are nice & simple - just works. Network manager is big and I have found to be buggy.
I am not expecting the CentOS project to fix this defect, I am more registering the idea that KISS can be a good option.

I have done all of that ... my post was mostly about me not being able to do that once network-scripts is removed.

You have to register the idea to Red Hat. Even though CentOS Stream will supposedly open development of RHEL to "community", it is still Red Hat that calls the shots and they seem to opt for different kind of "simple" (as can be seen in FirewallD).

Can you describe (point to) the bugs? I use NetworkManager on servers; once set up the network config never changes. I'd like to verify my configs to avoid those bugs.

NM did appear with RHEL 6. At that time it was severely lacking features, IMHO. It was about RHEL 7.3 or 7.4 when (included) NM got support for most of the features that I use.

NetworkManager mostly works. The biggest exception is running the router with it, the number of routing table updates and notifications it has to process slows it down to a crawl. It basically even cannot display network interfaces with full IPv6 BGP feed (and IPv6 routing table is 8-9 times smaller than IPv4 one).

On the other hand one can argue if RHEL/CentOS is the best fit for a router :).

But sr-iov network interface doesn't work correctly with NetworkManager under hyper-V. There is any bug in the NetworkManager. Under NetworkScripts sr-iov works fine.

Better report it then since they are going away from Fedora soon which means that they'll be gone gone in the next next RHEL (10)
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

It's not just sr-iov that doesn't work. If you want to create a team interface, so as to pass-through to KVM guests, you can't set to to BOOTPROTO=none without supplying an IP address. This is a big problem, because I don't want to make my guest's pass-through interface part of the attack surface of my hypervisor. In network-scripts, this isn't a problem.

The bottom line is that NetworkManager is written with the Apple audience in mind. By itself, that wouldn't be a problem, if the maintainers only had bothered to actually reach feature-parity with the resource they're replacing, for those of us with requirements more ambitious than "this can run my laptop".

The place to complain is to Red Hat. The larger your company and the more money they spend with them, the more effect that will have. Telling us here is unfortunately no use at all since no-one from RH reads this forum or cares about what we think.
