CentOS 8 with AMD Ryzen 5PRO: Unexpected reboots

Post by HenryH » 2021/12/30 08:04:08

Hi All,
We have about 30 servers out of a total of about 200 with kernel 4.18.0-301.1el8.x86_64 that sporadically reboot unexpectedly. Some are rebooting once a day some are once a week. The hardware configuration is:

-Mainboard ASRock RACK board X570 1xAM4 2x10G/2x1G µATX with onboard VGA grafic
-ASROCK TPM2-S module 2.0
-AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 4650G 6C/12T 3,7Hz 8MB AM4 65W
-64GB DDR4 ECC memory
-Adaptec 3151-4i RAID SAS 4-Kanal PCIe8x 12Gb/s
-4x Micron 5300 PRO SSD 2,5" 1,92TB 6GB/s 3DTLC as RAID 5
-CentOS 8 without X-Windows

The system is rebooting without any output on the screen (no kernel panic or core dump) the display just turns black and the computer restarts.
We tested one of the affected systems for a week under Windows 10 and high load without rebooting. Has someone an idea how to troubleshoot the issue? I attach 2 screenshots.

Thanks for your support.
Best regards
Henry

Start by updating to the 8.5 series of kernels as yours is out of date. Current is 4.18.0-348.2.1.el8_5.x86_64 or 4.18.0-348.7.1.el8_5.x86_64 which is out for RHEL and not for CentOS 8. I am unsure if the newer kernel will ever make it to CentSO 8 as it goes EOL tomorrow and will no longer receive updates. That also means you need to do something about your system as it will not receive any future updates after Jan 1st 2022. Look at Alma or Rocky Linux or perhaps OEL or even RHEL itself (if your use case qualifies for one of the Developer 16 free RHEL license subscriptions).
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
