HP Z800 Centos 8

Post by flame » 2021/08/25 20:17:51

Can anybody here help me get Centos 8 installed on a last generation HP Z800, my Hardrive doesn't show, its on a LSILogic SAS1068E-IR.

I Tried following http://elrepoproject.blogspot.com/2019/ ... pters.html, but no joy.

I managed to install it on a USB to SSD external, but when I install the SSD internally I get the Dracut error.

If anybody has this working pls share all steps.

Many Thanks

M

Why CentOS 8? It goes EOL at the end of 2021 so I'd suggest using something else. CentOS 7 is supported until 2024 and will recognise that controller out of the box so is one possibility. Otherwise there are Alma and Rocky Linux which are both RHEL clones and even RHEL itself can be used with a free developer subscription on up to 16 machines though there is some "debate" about the legality of running a production workload on that. There are some fairly weasel words in the T&Cs.

If you choose an el8 distro then you need to get what's known as a driver update disk from ELRepo and you need the one that matches the point release of el8 that you are trying to install - so if installing 8.4 then you need a DUD for 8.4. If you followed that article to the letter and used a DUD for 8.0 on a subsequent version then the driver would not load as it's built for the wrong kernel. Try looking in https://elrepo.org/linux/dud/el8/x86_64/ more specifically I suspect you need https://elrepo.org/linux/dud/el8/x86_64 ... elrepo.iso ?

Copy that to a USB stick and pass 'inst.dd=' to the installer kernel command line by pressing Tab (Legacy BIOS) or hitting 'e' (UEFI) and appending to the end. I think both methods want you to hit Ctrl-x to proceed with the modifications you've made.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I'd not bother with CentOS 8. If you want 8 then use either Alma or Rocky (I don't use 8 at all of any flavour). You'll only have to migrate in about 4 months if you use CentSO 8 so you might as well start with what you'll end up on in the end anyway.
