Re: RAID support

I was not able to register and don't have email client on this box to write email to make account there. In the driver instruction it says to make the driver and run that command but its for older CentOS and depends on old kernel. I was able to install the Config Tools because that uses Java11 and its working but no driver to see it.

Can you point me to the instructions I can try that kernel-ml package - I am little bit lost there. I can try it at.

The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

@filmtools

You can always create a free email account such as gmail and use that to register with the ELRepo's bug tracker.

Last night I have installed the kernel-ml-core-5.7.1-1.el8.elrepo.x86_64.rpm with yum install and also devel package - I looked inside I see the
esas2r.ko. But it did not work after I restarted I got in the GRUB entry for RedHat with that 5.x kernel and did not even boot desktop it was stuck at LSI controller probing. I was lucky that the GRUP had options for prior kernels and I selected that and yum removed those packages and restarted and was back that new kernel entry was gone. For a second I was under the impression that I would have to start all over again :)

Also I am reading about esas2r.ko and I see they show R680 / 6G version not my card R380 ?

This is my first time setting up CentOS8 workstation for DaVinci Resolve Studio - it is working really nice. I can notice in the timeline that it is playing smooth with RTX 2080ti. My intention is to compare it with Win enterprise setup.

As far as RAID volumes - all volumes are NTFS and RAID0 . Files are big raw video files for video editing / vfx work and 3D. I did run the disk benchmarks from the gui disk tool that is provided in CentOS8 and have not noticed any speed differences I think its even faster then in Windows. Would I benefit in speed if I format these volumes with native linux system? What would you suggest knowing my files are large video files. Smallest file is 300-500mb and they go up to 30-50GB per video file.

Today I have my laptop with me so I will make a ticket for ATTO Express R380 - I just need to see the volume - I don't need to boot from it .

thanks,
ed

I found this in the install documentation for ATTO R380

Type the following to manually load the module:

$ modprobe esasraid

You may receive a warning that the module will taint the kernel.

On SUSE 11, you may also receive an error message about "unsupported" drivers:

$ modprobe esasraid
FATAL: module '/lib/modules/2.6.27.19-5-default/kernel/drivers/scsi/esasraid.ko' is unsupported
Use --allow-unsupported or set allow_unsupported_modules to 1 in
/etc/modprobe.d/unsupported-modules

You can fix this problem by loading the driver with modprobe --allow-unsupported esasraid or editting the file /etc/modprobe.d/unsupported-modules as described.

you can see here they show esasraid.ko for my card

Unfortunately, the R380 Linux driver is only supported in Linux kernels up to 2.6.x. Therefore, the R380 driver will not work in Centos8 unless you can find a way to run one of those older kernels on that version.

Thank you!

What version of old CentOS uses 2.6.x kernel? I am thinking my best bet is just to setup a VM under CentOS8 and install a version that uses 2.6.x kernel and then just share files like that is that possible? I use this RAID for mid backup for projects per day basis.

Thanks,
Ed

CentOS 6 uses a 2.6 kernel but it only has < 5 months life left. And running it as a VM will not work as it needs direct access to the hardware to be able to control it so unless you get into nasty things like directly attaching the hardware device to the VM, it will not work.

Perhaps it's time for a new card? Worth asking ATTO if their newer controllers would see the array created on the old one without a backup/restore cycle?

can I setup windows 10 then on VM under centos8 and share files - on windows the drivers are working just fine. It would be just to directly backup instead of backup up to another raid rebooting into win and then backing up there?

VMs don't have direct access to hardware so the answer is still no.
