Intel wifi adapter not found on Lenovo Yoga S940

Post by cristobal » 2020/04/15 22:27:17

I installed CentOS-8 on a Lenovo yoga laptop a few days ago, but I cannot get the wifi to work. I've tried lots of things following suggestions from replies to several questions on different sites. NetworkManager-wifi is installed (and always was). Below are some of the commands people usually ask for, I really don't know what else to do; any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm using CentOS 8, kernel 4.18.0-147.5.1.el8_1.x86_64 (updated after install).

Re: Intel wifi adapter not found on Lenovo Yoga S940

Post by TrevorH » 2020/04/16 22:18:58

That adapter is supported by the CentOS 8 kernel module iwlwifi. It would appear that it doesn't like the firmware file that is currently on your system for it though. You could try downloading the latest firmware file from Intel and untarring that and overwriting the copy of iwlwifi-8265-36.ucode in /usr/lib/firmware/ though I do not know if that will help. I've also seen a mention in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1804841 of running echo "options cfg80211 cfg80211_disable_40mhz_24ghz=Y" > /etc/modprobe.d/cfg80211.conf (will require a reload of the cfg80211 module, probably most easily done by rebooting).

There are some other hints and possibilities listed in that same bug report including one about reconfiguring the access point.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Re: Intel wifi adapter not found on Lenovo Yoga S940

Thanks.

I updated all iwlwifi firmware following the link at the bottom of https://www.intel.la/content/www/xl/es/ ... rking.html (which are newer than those posted directly in that page), as well as adding the line you suggested to the modprobe file, though that seems to have been a fix for a different issue?

Out of curiosity, why do you think it's specifically the iwlwifi-8265 ucode that I needed to update? I can't see 8265 showing up anywhere. I do see the following line in dmesg:

Code: Select all

[ 5.147294] iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: Detected Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX101, REV=0x338
and I don't see firmware for AX101 in https://www.intel.la/content/www/xl/es/ ... rking.html.

Any ideas?

Thanks again!
