I meet this problem recently.
I installed centos8,
and I install nvidia-driver which I downloaded from nvidia home;
before install the driver, I blacklist the nouveau first.
when I installed the driver successfully, reboot,
then when the login screen appear, my screen was dead. not any response.
I can't login the system.
I can't login when I installed nvidia-driver
Re: I can't login when I installed nvidia-driver
Maybe you can press CTRL+ALT+F2 to access a virtual console , then undo your changes.Check also for "(EE)" string in /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see if there is an error loading some driver.
I recently tryed the same on CentOS7, and had to switch to nouveau driver again,then "yum group remove GNOME" and reinstall again.
But my problem was triggered not just by driver, but a combination of trials after installation that made me hit the famous "login loop" screen problem, in which all is ok, but gnome refuses to continue after you introduce the password.
Also, i removed plymouth to at least see what was happening until the point the driver was loaded, with yum remove plymouth.

Re: I can't login when I installed nvidia-driver
Can you switch to a TTY (Ctrl+Alt+F1), login, rm .Xauthority, switch over to the GUI again (Alt+F7) and retry?
