kernel-devel-4.18.0-301.1.el8 breaks backlight control on my laptop

Post by wrkn » 2021/05/03 20:43:38

Hi All,

I have been using CentOS for a long time. For the first time I think I have found a bug I would like to report.
I run CentOS 8 stream on a Lenovo X240. I found that there is no backlight control with kernel-devel-4.18.0-301.1.el8. When I boot kernel-4.18.0-294.el8 backlight control works again.

I'm running the "Standard (X11 display server) on Xorg" gnome 3 session. Both the brightness slider in the panel in the top rightt corner and the <Fn> + <F5/F6> keys don't work and the backlight does not come on after suspend to RAM when I boot 4.18.0-301.1.el8.

I first noticed that the backlight did not turn on after suspend to RAM. This was after I had tuned my system with powertop, so at first I thought I had broken things myself, but then I found undoing the tuning changes does not solve the problem. Booting the previous kernel does.

That's a Stream kernel and thus you need to report it as a bug via bugzilla.redhat.com where you can find Stream as a "version" under the RHEL Linux category somewhere.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
Use the FAQ Luke

I did not realize CentOS stream could be found somewhere below RHEL, but it worked:

Red Hat emphasized that development of RHEL will be more transparent and inclusive when they shifted focus of CentOS Project from downstream CentOS Linux to upstream CentOS Stream. If Stream is built by RHEL engineers and is a preview of RHEL content, then "below RHEL" is the most direct route for feedback (that will benefit RHEL).

In practice, even majority of CentOS Linux bugs have always been RHEL bugs, since an objective was to be bug-for-bug compatible.
