Xrdp failing to connect from windows 10 since update

Post by mjz » 2023/05/29 12:56:09

I have two Centos 8 servers which I connect to from a windows 10 computer using xrdp. Worked great until last update.
Now I get an error:

[ERROR] xrdp_wm_log_msg: error loading libvnc.so specified in xrdp.ini, please add a valid entry like lib=libxrdp-vnc.so or similar

Any suggestions?

(xrdp connection to both of these machines is routine. Nothing has changed, just routine updates. I suspect something is broken in xrdp with the update)

Can someone help me get xrdp to work again on Centos 8? Does it work on Centos 9?

I tried to downgrade to the last stable version, but received the following error(s)

Last metadata expiration check: 0:13:25 ago on Thu 01 Jun 2023 12:19:27 PM CDT.
xrdp-0.9.21-1.el8.x86_64.rpm 335 kB/s | 472 kB 00:01
Error:
Problem: problem with installed package xrdp-selinux-1:0.9.22.1-2.el8.x86_64
- package xrdp-selinux-1:0.9.22.1-2.el8.x86_64 requires xrdp = 1:0.9.22.1-2.el8, but none of the providers can be installed
- cannot install both xrdp-1:0.9.21-1.el8.x86_64 and xrdp-1:0.9.22.1-2.el8.x86_64
- conflicting requests
(try to add '--allowerasing' to command line to replace conflicting packages or '--skip-broken' to skip uninstallable packages or '--nobest' to use not only best candidate packages)

Any suggestions?

Problem solved.

Downgraded didn't work, like I thought, but all I had to do was copy the downrev version of library libxrdp.so.0 to a backup location and then reinstall xrdp to the latest version and then copy back to /usr/lib64/xrdp the older library. Xrdp started right up. It's a hack for now, but at least it works. Perhaps there is a better way, but since centos 8 stream is end of life, I will migrate to the new system and this hack goes away.

CentOS Stream 8 is not EOL until 2024.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I should have wrote, "near end of life".

Over the next few months, I have to decide whether to migrate to Centos 9 stream or Almalinux,Rocky.
Whatever is the quickest/easiest to do from Centos stream 8.

Going from one major version to another is a complete reinstall.
You may be able to convert Stream 8 to Rocky/Alma/OEL/etc. 8.
Stream is a rolling pre-release (aka. beta) of the next RHEL
point release, so migrating to one of the rebuilds may be better.

I'd go straight to 9 unless there is a reason not to. And I'd bypass Stream entirely and go Rocky/Alma.
