CentOS 9 latest kernel doesn't boot

Post by -Drizzt- » 2022/10/04 20:01:41

Hello all!

I am using CentOS Stream 9 on VMWare ESXi 7 fully updated with secure boot enabled.

A new kernel was installed last night, but the VMs can't boot on it.

Error is :

sb.c:183:bad shim signature
linux.c:259:you need to load kernel first

For the moment, I boot the VMs in the previous kernel. Anything I can do to solve this problem?

I would suggest reading the new sticky post at the top of this forum viewtopic.php?f=9&t=79466

Sounds like exactly the sort of problem you'll get more help on there than here.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I had the same issue, but in the esxi web interface I had to go to the settings for that guest: "Edit settings" -> "VM Options, and set "Boot Options" to BIOS. There was a warning but the iso booted after that.

Yes, well, that would fix a secure boot problem since Legacy BIOS mode doesn't do secure boot.

The real solution is to ask the Stream guys what they did to break it.

Yup. That would be best. I'm just running a test lab with esxi, on old hardware, so no big deal here.
